Diegetic/ Non-diegetic sounds in Hanna.

 Hanna.

During a media lesson we learnt about diegetic and non diegetic sound. We then watched a clip from a movie called Hanna, and then seperated diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.

Diegetic sounds- sounds that the actors in the scene hear. Here are some from Hanna:

  • Footsteps, giving a feeling of being followed
  • Doors closing, making us feel like Hanna is trapped making her escape even more exciting and impressive.
  • There is an elogated sound of the door handle spinning round, this cretes suspense as we know this is probably the key to her escape
  • Her loud breathing is in time with the music, the fact that she is out of breath trying to escape makes us feel sorry for her, as we then know how much she wants to get out.
  • Neck breaking, makes it more dramatic
  • Alarm noises, this creates a feeling of chaos and panick
  • The air release when she opens the trap door the music and stops all the music and chaos, telling us that she is now free and they can no longer get her.
non-diegetic- sounds that are not actually in the scene. For example:

  • There are background drum sounds when she is running, this gives a cool feel. This goes in hand with the action.
  • There a lazer sounds this gives it a modern atmosphere.
  • There is a more prominent beat towards the end, creating suspense as she gets closer to escaping.
  • When the beat stops, she has opened the hatch, signifying her escape

180 Degree Rule and Rule of Thirds

Filming a short scene

In a filming workshop, we learned how to film a short scene. our scene included a girl walking over to a chair picking up her phone then walking away. We did this with four different shots..

1. A wide shot

2. A close up of her face

3. A close up of the phone

4. A close up of her upper body with phone in shot

To do this we had four types of jobs needed...

1. director- decided when the scene ends and finishes and directs the scene

2. camera man- controls the angle and switches on the camera, they make sure the white balance and focus is correct
3. actor- plays a character in a scene
4. coordinator- has to remember exactly what the actor did incase they need to repeat it for a scene with a different zoom

During this media workshop, we learnt some basic terminology used by professional filmmakers....

Standby-   everybody ready ( which everyone must say) after the director has stated.
Rolling-   the camera man says this when the camera is recording
Action-   when he feels the actor should begin the scene
Cut-   when the director wants the recording to stop

Setting up the camera for filming

After turning on the camera we must do two things before we press record.....

Setting up the tripod

Thriller Analysis

This video was made by previous AS students. Thier task was  was to produce the introduction to a thriller movie. Our task, was to analyse it and see why we knew it was a thriller.  I chose Pathogen because to me it seemed like the most obvious, this was for various reasons.

We know immediately that this is a thriller; this is due to the contrast between the slow camera movements and the fast jolty images thrown at us. which shock us, suggesting that this is what the movie has also been designed to do.

The music is also very contrasting- there are three notes repeated in minor key going up, each time creating more tension. This gives an eerie and unsettling mood. These notes are played with the slow camera movements. Then distorted random music is played with the the quickly changing images. This gives a feeling of brokenness and abandonment.

The music fits with the images of broken glass, giving us a feeling of previous chaos and vandalism.

An obvious give away, about the fact it is a thriller is the number of dead bodies shown. As death is commonly associated with murder and torture, something we would expect in a thriller. The bodies create suspense and suspicion, as the audience will assume that by watching the film they will discover how they died.

The clips shown to us are mainly from inside the building and from a low height. This gives a secretive feel , as if we are not meant to know the bodies are there. This creates questions, does anybody know about them, making the whole introduction more mysterious.

During one of the clips we see a sign saying 'mask up' this suggests that the building was once in action, so we start to wonder why it no longer is.

When we are shown the title at the end ( Pathogen) , it flickers briefly and we see the word 'death'. This again shocks and scares us as the word death is unsettling, and is commonly the result of a thriller.

Children of Men

Another film advert I have Analysed, is Children of Men. from doing so we can learn about the genre the character and parts of the plot, all of which make us want to watch the film.

The Shining

What can we tell about this thriller from the advert?

He looks animalistic, this is due to his bearing teeth. They are not touching, this gives the impression that he is breathing heavily, therefore we could guess that he has been chasing her. This also makes him look hungry, as if he is about to tear her apart, and do unhumane things, creating tension.
He also looks larger than the woman suggesting that he is stronger and more in control, giving us the feeling that something will happen to her in the film, making her look weaker and more vulnerable, creating more suspense for the film. His weapon ( an ax) is also a more dangerous weapon than the small blunt looking knife  that she is holding. Another comparison between the two characters is the color of their background. The woman has a white background. White is a typical representation of innocence  and vulnerability, implying her situation. This juxtaposes with his dark background, hinting that he is the ‘baddie’.
Other things that we can tell about the woman and the man are who is chasing who. The fact that she is smaller than him suggests that he is the attacker and she is in defense. Other things that tell us this is a chase, is the fact he is on the left side, which is the side we start reading on, meaning that we will see him then her first when we look at the advert. This gives us the impression that he is chasing her.

About me!

Well, my name is Leila Maria Toulmin, and I have set up this blog for my media AS. I'm 16 and I live in Cheshire, but I go to school in Surrey which means I have to board, it takes around five hours to get home from school! but i'm going to this school because I want to do performing arts as a profession. I especially like musical theatre as I can never choose between acting singing and dancing- musicals include all three. Apart from performing arts I really enjoy making short films with my friends and watching films. My two favourite films would have to be these:

theyre both very different, I especially like Ferris Bueller's day off as I love the eighties, but i love the smooth cool style that pulp fiction gives off.
